Don
Giovanni of Austria, Spanish prince, was prechosen from Devout V as commander of
the naval fleet of the Saint Alloy and defeated the Turks in the great battle of
Lepanto (7 October 1571) where it came hurt and later on it repaired with its
fleet in the Port of Messina where it came applauded liberator. Certainly Don
Juan of Austria without the prepared geographical papers for
the occasion from Francesco Maurolico would not have gone
very distant and the victory achieved hardly by the
Crusaders would be concretized each other.
Andrea
Calamech, architect and carrarese, follower sculptor of the michelangiolesco
Bartolomeo Ammannati, flourishing school of art worked to Messina in the second
half of the '500 founding one. Only integral work of the Calamech is today the
Monument to Don Juan of Austria (1572).
