The bronze monument was commissioned from the messinese Decurionato famous sculptor
Peter Tenerani (1789-1869). The new king had been
received favorably from the population that nourished great hopes on its
acts. The great artist realized some sketches of
the work (the statue was high beyond three meters) that then it would
have been placed solemn in Public square of the Dome 30 May 1845. The
monument came but destroyed during the insurrectionary motions of 1848.
The messinese Decurionato deliberated 20 November 1852 to rifare the
statues of the king Borboni that went destroyed. The Tenerani supplied a
copy similar to the previous one, the king was represented in the
ceremonial dress of Great Master of the Order of Saint Gennaro. The
statue came completed to Rome in 1856 and transferred to Messina in
November 1857. After the earthquake of 1908 the
statue was arranged in the National Museum. In 1973 it was given back to
the Common one of Messina that it has arranged it in the garden of
Garibaldi street. |
